Bereavement is the sense of loss experienced when a loved one passes away. Bereavement is also referred to as grief. In most cases this sense of loss (bereavement) is accompanied by a host of emotions such as sadness, anger, guilt, frustration, loneliness and anxiety.
The period immediately following a loss of an individual is known as the ‘Bereavement Period’ or ‘Mourning Period’. The bereavement period will last depending upon the closeness of the person with the deceased. An individual grieving for the deceased is referred to us ‘in bereavement’ or ‘in mourning’
In case of an untimely death, death due to an accident, or any kind of unusual and unnatural death the bereavement period is longer. In some extreme cases individuals go into denial and some fail to grieve because they go into shock/freeze. These mentioned situations can be problematic for the individual as it disturbs their functional life.
Allowing oneself the time to bereave is important as it allows the person to come to terms, hence finding peace after a demise. The individuals who fail to go through the entire process of bereavement find it difficult to continue with their regular and functional life as they are always pre-occupied.
Help is available for such bereavement issues through counselling services. Therapists use therapeutic techniques such as ‘Gestalt Therapy’ wherein the client is facilitated to resolve their unfinished matters of their life.
