Emotions are the essence of life. A good deal of us are taught to control or suppress our emotions from childhood, which in turn makes us emotionally unequipped adults. Even accepting and acknowledging your feelings are necessary. A common state that most of us go through is denial of something, even emotions. We deny that we feel anger, love, frustration or sadness. We encourage ourselves to be different versions of ourselves, we pretend to be different versions of ourselves.
Emotions and feelings motivate humans. They are what keep us safe. Emotions help us stay on track and take better care of ourselves. Emotions are responsible for the ‘fight or flight’ response which has helped us evolve into the beings we are today.
To run away from our emotions would be to run away from who you are as a person. One of the important aspects we stress about in counselling is acknowledging and accepting your feelings. We have reached a place where recognizing our feelings itself is a task. We might feel frustrated, irritated, rejected or mad but we don’t know how to express it, and say ‘angry’ instead.
