Amidst the things that we yearn, peace of mind is sought after the most. The feeling of tranquility and calmness can enhance your potential and bring about clarity in your work. It is difficult to get into the routine of calmness in a day.
So how do we go about this?
Even with regards to calmness, there has been a lot of new trends which has swept in, a lot of which can be done with ease, by which I mean you don’t need a room or a yoga mat to gain the bliss of peace. You can start small exercises that can be practiced anywhere.
What about at your work place?
Your work place can be quite the stressor. Understanding that you would spend most of the time in a day (and your life) at your workplace, it is important that you find your calm there. Here are a few things that might help you kick off the day with a smile:
- Find your space. Ever seen Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory? And how uncomfortable he is when he is not in his ‘spot’? Yes. Find your spot and make it yours. It can be your desk, the window at the end, the terrace, anywhere. But find it, and make it comfortable for you. What will this do? In those situations of intense pressure and stress, coming to your spot brings about the feelings of familiarity, and will help your mind slow down to work with clarity and peace.
- Familiarize your desk. Your work desk or office is going to be a big part of you. It is your second home. So make sure that it reminds you of everything that you love and want. This helps in motivating you to reach deadlines and finish your work with zest.
- Have a Morning routine. This one might be repeated by a lot of people several times but I can’t stress this enough. Keep aside half an hour for something you like to do. It can be as simple as looking out and enjoying the breeze in your breath or making yourself a cup of coffee. But keep this time to yourself. No distractions. Starting your day with a fresh and clean mind will help greatly in remaining peaceful throughout the day.
- Be Aware of your Emotions. Your emotions are a compass to what ticks you off and what keeps you going. Emotions are the greatest gift to mankind. So be mindful and aware of what you are feeling with regards to a situation, person or place. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting happiness all the time. In fact, anger is an also an emotion that will guide you into following calmness. Hence, be aware of what you are feeling. Recognize it; see if it is working well for you (yes, anger and sadness can work well appropriately). If it is, great! If it isn’t, then check what would be the stimuli of the particular emotion, and work on your desired reaction towards it. Have a boss that you can’t stand? Imagine a clown nose on him or have your favorite song in your head when talking to him/her
- Practice makes Perfect. Practice a relaxation technique that you are comfortable with, every day. It can be for a minimum of 15 minutes to half an hour. Makes sure that you find a technique that will suit you. From meditation, to colouring even cooking for some! Do it every day, enjoy it.
To conclude, I would borrow the words of Marcus Tullius Cicero who said, “The pursuit, even of the best things, ought to be calm and tranquil”
